How Crypto Price Tickers Work: Pairs, Sources, and 24/7 Markets
Understand trading pairs, quote currencies, exchange-specific prices, composite indexes, 24/7 sessions, volatility, precision, liquidity, and stale-data states in crypto tickers.
Digital-asset displays
Make the pair, source, time window, and freshness visible so a crypto price never appears more universal or current than it is.
A digital-asset ticker normally expresses the value of one asset in another, such as a base asset priced in a quote currency. The exact number can differ across exchanges because each venue has its own orders, trades, liquidity, fees, outages, and market participants.
Show the base and quote asset, then state whether the value is venue-specific, aggregated from eligible venues, or calculated as an index or reference rate. A compact symbol without source context can look more universal than it is.
Continuous markets do not share one natural daily close. A “24-hour change” may compare the latest value with a rolling observation, while another display may reset at midnight in a chosen time zone. The interface should name the convention.
Tiny prices can require many decimal places; large prices may require separators and fewer decimals. Use a formatting policy based on meaningful precision rather than fitting every asset into one fixed decimal rule.
A 24/7 market still experiences venue maintenance, feed interruptions, stale values, and extreme volatility. Monitor source timestamps independently of the display clock. If a source is late, stop presenting its value as current.
A prominent price does not establish liquidity, custody safety, execution quality, regulatory status, or suitability. Make educational and risk disclosures visible, especially when a display could be mistaken for a trading product.

Questions
Clear labels and defined behavior make a ticker easier to trust, test, and maintain.
Prices form on separate venues with different orders, liquidity, currencies, and market conditions. Aggregated products also apply their own eligibility and calculation rules.
It often compares the latest value with a rolling observation from about 24 hours earlier, but the exact method varies and should be documented.
Trading can continue around the clock, but an individual venue or data connection can be unavailable or stale. A ticker needs explicit source-health monitoring.
